Bonus Day – #101 … ha ha!

Since I can, I’m continuing this trend.  Today I had the last of my Zwiefalter Kloster brews: the Kloster Weizen (Hefetrueb).  This is the most popular Zwiefalter beer (I think) brewed following the old Kloster tradition–an unfiltered wheat; very flavorful and quite pleasant.  This is definitely a nice one for 101! LOL

Success! 100 Beers!

Today I was going to visit the Schorschbraeu brewery and sample one of his BIG Beers for my 100th.  Unfortunately the weather didn’t cooperate sooooooo …. I went to the Porsche Museum again! LOL (this time I brought my Camera)

However, in their restaurant they did have some nice beer: König Ludwig Weißbier Hell

– so, it is a Wheat Beer for the 100th!  Surprise.  This one comes from the Kaltenberg Brewery in Bavaria.  (I’ll be having a few more of their beers)  Overall a pleasant beer with which to top 100!  Additionally, to make it even more special, I had a few friends celebrate with me AND I had my favorite pasta dish (Penne Gorgonzola) … yes, at the Porsche Museum.  Oh, we drank enough to make sure we had a good sampling.

All in all, a great way to go over 100 different beers in 100 days!

No. 99? – A Kloster brew obviously …

Well, today is my 99th in the beer journey, so I had a nice Schnitzel, homemade German Noodles (Spaetzle), and a Kellerpils for dinner from my favorite Biergarten: Zom Wuff … then for dessert, I topped it off with a Doppelbock from the Ettaler brewery: The Curator.

A small beer education — most Doppelbocks (Double Bock Beers) are given a name ending in “or.”  So you will find Doppelbocks in Germany with names like “Optimator” or “Salvator” or “Celebrator.”  Even Troegs brewery in the US named theirs “Troegenator.”  Of course, you can see that Ettaler used word play in their naming convention as well since their brewery is in an Abbey — thus, the Curator.  End of small beer lesson…
I was slightly disappointed with this brew — the taste was a little metallic right off the bat, then it settled down but the body was too thin in my opinion for a double.  I wish there was just a little more support for the Alcohol — it started warming me up about 1/2 way through it … I guess that was good. LOL

Either way, I will continue to enjoy the ride!

Every day is exciting! Even one spent in the room …

Today was pretty laid back, but there’s always something going on — in my mind at least! LOL!  I stay pretty busy during my off-work time because of my 8,000,000 hobbies — so each day usually has it’s share of surprises/excitement.

Today I sampled another Zwiefalter beer: Schwarzer Keiler.   It is a seasonal (October thru March) dark beer … it had a nice flavor; the body was nice and robust to support the color/flavor/style.   Overall, very “drinkable” beer.

Oh, and “Schwarzer Keiler” means “Black Boar” so there’s a nice picture on the label of a wild hog … he he.

Tuesday Night Klosterbrau: Ettaler Weizen

Yes, I went back to the “Kloster” for this evening’s brew: Ettaler Benediktiner Weizen.

Not a bad weizen…as a side note–my friend and I tried to “visit” this brewery (while we were visiting the Abbey).  They weren’t having any of that — I would say that, of all the breweries we’ve “crashed”/visited, these were the least pleasant.  I don’t know, maybe it was a bad day — but, it won’t keep me from drinking their beers (LOL!)

Catch my breath day — with a Hefe Weizen!

It always seems like a whirlwind on Monday for me–today was no different.  Started with a busy day at work … then went to a solemn memorial service for a soldier and played my bagpipes.  A time to reflect on life and death–and to continue to live by my mottoes: “Live Life 2 the Brim” and “Each Day is Meaningful.”

Every day I wake up and try to match these mottoes … no matter how big or small any of the activities I’m participating in that day, they are meaningful and I try to enjoy them to the fullest!

Today was no different and I wrapped it up with one of my favorite styles of German beers — a Hefe Weizen.  This one was from Hacker-Pschorr and it definitely hit the spot.

What a great way to close out a busy and meaningful day.

From Trier to Annweiler … a nice journey

Today we returned to Stuttgart from the Mosel … via Trier with a quick stop through Annweiler.

What can I say about Trier … search for the reference to it on a previous post.  I did go see the Roman Ampitheater and St Paulin’s Cathedral this time.  Wow.  Well worth a trip and another reason this is my favorite city in Germany.

From Trier we drove down through the Rhineland Palatinate Forest (Pfaelzerwald) to Annweiler and had a cake/coffee under the castle of Trifels.

Oh, I went ahead and had my beer for the day here too.  It was the Karlsberg feingold.  I’ve had a Karlsberg before, but it was the Ur-Pils.  This was a very nice beer–and a pleasant location to enjoy it!

Piesport, Germany – A little wine tasting … and a beer!

Today I traveled up to the Mosel Valley in Germany and stopped in a little village called Piesport.  This village is well-known for their wines–there is evidence that they’ve been making wine here for 2000 years — not 500 yards from our hotel was a Roman-Celtic wine cellar from the 3rd to 5th Century.

We went to a wonderful wine-tasting at the Spaeter-Veit Vineyard.  If you happen to be in Germany, on the Mosel, in Piesport — I highly recommend you stop at this place and sample their excellent wines.

Even in winter, the Mosel is a magical place…and even though I was feeling good from the wine-tasting, I still followed through with my mission and drank a beer. LOL!  What was it you ask?  A Kulmbacher Moenchshof “Original” Pilsner … sorry, no good description for this one … it’s probably pretty good, but I did drink it after about 2 liters of wine … sooooo …. because I’m dedicated to this task … here are the pictures! :)

The Red Robber of Beers? Yes, I’ve tried it …

Eichbaum (Oak Tree) brewery makes a very nice beer with their Rotes Raeuberbier.  Of course, they too have been brewing for over 300 years … so the experience helps.  However, I can’t for the life of me tell you why they named it “Red Robber.”  I assume this guy is supposed to be a Robin Hood — but I could be wrong.

Either way, this is a very nice amber-colored beer with a creamy head and excellent flavor.

Yes, recommended …

Mexican Beer? Yes, Mexican Beer in Germany

There’s a pretty neat little Mexican restaurant near where I work — and they make pretty mean Mexican food … which is slightly humorous because the owner/cook is from South Africa.  But, hey, you can’t fault determination and quality … everything at this place is good.  He makes a pretty mean Margarita … yes!

However, this day their CO2 tanks were out of “gas” so they only had bottled beer.  What did I decide to have you ask?  Oh, just a Dos Equis … but the dark one.  You can’t go wrong with the dark one–but of course, there are a lot of others you could go better with! LOL
